The Covington School Board began educational facilities for African American students in 1873. By 1879, enrollment in Covington's African American School had reached 229. In 1888, a new school located on 7th Street between Madison and Scott Blvd was opened to meet the demands of the growing number of students enrolled in the school. The school at the time was named 7th Street Colored School and it was the only school for African Americans in Covington. When the school opened in 1888, it only had 3 teachers to teach the 200 students enrolled. The school closed in 1931 when Lincoln Grant School was opened at Ninth and Scott Blvd.
